    Part One: Application of Defensible Space [35 points]

    Choose a neighborhood to discuss. Since we are still corona-ed and cannot physically go observe a neighborhood, please either do this from memory and/or looking out a window. Alternatively, you can pick a neighborhood from a television show/movie that you recently watched. Then use the crime prevention concepts discussed in chapter 14 to assess the probable success of the neighborhood’s crime-prevention capabilities. Does the neighborhood have physical design features conducive to preventing crime? In order to help address this question, you should note the following:

    1. What neighborhood you are evaluating? Where is it (or what tv show/movie is it from)? [1 point]

    2. Discuss these design features of the neighborhood that might be related to crime prevention (just answer these in bullet points).

    A. The natural surveillance available:

    · What is the layout/design of the streets in the area (are there cul-de-sacs, one-way streets, etc. or a lot of 4-way intersections? Is traffic circulation easy or difficult? [1.5 points total]

    · What is the design and layout of the houses/buildings in the community vis-a-vis the street? Is it easy for people in different houses to see the streets and to watch each other’s property? Why or why not (e.g., landscaping interference; porches for viewing). [1.5 points total]

    · How is land used in the neighborhood? Is it primarily residential, or does it have a lot of non-residential uses? Describe. [1.5 points total]

    · Is there adequate lighting in the neighborhood? [1 point]

    B. The territoriality displayed:

    · Is it easy to get in and out of the neighborhood? Why or why not? [1 point total]

    · Are there walls, fences, landscaping, walkways, etc. serving to define boundaries? [1 point]

    · Is there signage in the area used to define appropriate use of space? [1 point]

    · Are there areas designated for specific uses? [1 point]

    · Are there areas designated for community interaction? [1 point]

    C. The image of the area:

    · Is it a “clean” neighborhood or is it littered with trash, graffiti, etc.? [1 point]

    · What are the conditions of the buildings in the area? Well-kept or broken windows, loose shutters, etc.? [1 point] Noticeable vacancy? [1 point]

    · Are there abandoned cars on the roadways? How many? [1.5 points total]

    · Does the area appear to be quiet, or are there a lot of noises/noisy neighbors? What types of noises? [1.5 points total]

    · Are there groups of kids hanging out on the street? How many? [1.5 points total]

    · Are there signs of public drinking and/or drug use? [1 point]

    · Describe any other sources of physical or social incivilities. [1 point]

    D. The milieu/juxtaposition of the neighborhood:

    · What sorts of areas surround the neighborhood? [1 point]

    3. Based upon your environmental observations, would you expect effective crime prevention in this neighborhood, or in particular sections of this neighborhood? Why or why not? [5 points] Please link it in with at least one theory that we have discussed. [8 points]

     

    Part Two: Application to General Victimology [25 points]

    Think back to our discussion in chapter one about general victimology and its five types (i.e., criminal, self, social environment, technology, and natural environment).

    · First, in your opinion, should these types of victimization be included in our discussion on recurring victimization? Why or why not? For instance, if you have survived two plane crashes or one plane crash and one train crash, should we consider you a recurring victim of technological failures? Please note that this question is about two of the same type of general victimization. [10 points]

    · Second, read these few cases that discuss how direct and indirect victims of mass shootings have then died by suicide (article 1article 2).

    · Reflect on both articles (e.g., tell me your thoughts, feelings, questions, etc.). [5 points]

    · Finally, do you consider these individuals to be recurring victims (i.e., individuals who directly experienced a mass shooting or indirectly lost a loved one to a mass shooting AND then they died by suicide)? Stated differently, according to general victimology, these individuals were victimized by crime and then by the self. Should cases like this that span two of the five forms of general victimology be included in our discussion of recurring victimization? Explain.
