Instructions: In this essay, students are assigned to write a response to “Brave New World”. The writing is to be developed by following one or more of these suggestions:
-Character motivation (what drives the primary character (the protagonist), based on what the reader can infer from the events).
* Under this literary device, you may identify the conflict experienced by one main character (a protagonist). What drives him or her to overcome the conflict, or to bring about a change to the current situation at hand? Is he or she ultimately successful? Who (or what) are the main protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) in the novel, and how would you analyze what drives them to act?
-Cultural context (how the conditions endured by the primary character are linked to a specific aspect of culture, setting, and/or social issues. If possible, compare or contrast the conditions of one culture with that of another culture.
* Brave New World was published in 1932 (which, as a historical context) was the peak of the Great Depression, a time when economic suffering was widespread).
-An analysis of the novel’s implications of dystopia. How do characters overcome (or attempt to overcome) the limitation of living in a world where everything is “upside-down”?
*Also, you may consider writing about the dystopian theme, and its contradictions. For example, in the “new” world depicted in the novel, people are engineered (physically/emotionally) not to experience pain, but life is also made to seem meaningless as a result.
Also, in case your essay is short on paragraphs, main ideas, or material in general:
*A description of symbolism in the novel, in which students will develop a creative and personal interpretation of events, items, or objects described in the story, and if possible, that of the actions and/or the dialogues of characters)
Length: 1200-1500 words (not including Works Cited Page)
100 Points: Organization of paragraphs (thesis, main ideas, supporting details, conclusion)
40 points: Grammar, syntax, punctuation, word choice.
40 points: Tone, voice, and awareness of audience (concepts detailed in class)
20 points: MLA-style formatting and citations. Total: 100 points.
