Welcome to Week 7!
We have already covered the basics of conflict management early in the course before you worked on teams together. This week, we will review some communication skills in interpersonal relationships, developing intimacy in relationships through self-disclosure, and feedback.
Relationships are about knowledge, ways of understanding the world, and connecting people, they are continuously being transformed, reinforced, through relationships. The desire for a relationship is universal. Relationships occur in stages, moving from initialing to intimacy, and in some cases dissolution. This

Look at the following graphic that illustrates the stages of relationship development and deterioration. It shows five steps that people go through to come together in relationships and the five-step process that results in deterioration of relationships. This is a generalized model as movement does not always follow a straight line.

located, I can be enrolled at the New Orleans campus but the professor and other students can be located in another state. Using my communication skills to communicate with the professor when I don’t understand something plays a huge role.
I do tend to use online technology more in one context than the other depending on the situation. I like to use old media, when I am talking to my friends or family. I feel like its more meaning full when using old media to communicate. I feel that face to face conversation is better than using technology to communication because sometimes you can not know the tone of the person through reading an email or post. Writing a letter may be hard to know the persons tone also but it is more meaningful getting an actual letter, especially when you do not have access to technology.

I like that you highlighted the fact that a student can literally be in college at an online school whos hub is across the country, all due to technology. My technology definitely changes in certain contexts. For example, I use texting or social media to contact friends or family, however in professional settings I use email or phone calls. Phone calls are usually the better option in order to best obtain the intended tone. Emails are a good way to display professionalism, but is very hard to establish tone.

I chose to write about option 2- technology.
Technology has had an interesting affect on our lifestyles. On a daily basis at school I can’t get by without having my computer or at least my phone with me in class. We take group quizzes online, take notes on a google document, look at power points and take notes on those as well. Unfortunately because I have my computer and phone on hand at all times it’s also a major distraction. In my opinion, technology is a crutch in our society because of all of the distractions. Nursing is a serious step in my education and it annoys me that I have a constant distraction from something that I also need to use for my schooling.
Professionally in my position right now, technology puts myself and my gym at a big advantage. We are able to promote ourself and post videos, photos, information, promotional, etc. As I mentioned before, because our society has shifted to more of a technology focused group, we can use it as an advantage to sell our businesses, services, offers and more. Using technology to our advantage benefits us greatly in a profession standpoint.
I listen to the news every morning on my way to work- and am kind of annoyed that I have to interrupt my news when I need to get out of my car, however, the news station that I listen to is easily transferred to an app on my phone now- and I can literally keep listening just the same on my walk from my car to the gym or at any time during the day. My best friends works for NBC Chicago, and I constantly get updates on important issues in Chicago or worldwide- this is all because of the use of technology! More and more people can stay updated on real life issues and conflicts, important updates with weather/traffic or any other pertinent situation taking place. I think this is a beneficial addition to our life- and it’s definitely not going to go away, only continue to become more updated.
While technology does benefit my personal life greatly whether it comes to keeping in touch with friends who lives miles away, seeing my nephews, or maintaining a social media presence to promote my fitness. However, social media/technology affects me greatly in not so great ways as well. I sometimes feel as if I’m “hidden” behind my phone because it sometimes feels like an addiction. According to McLean, “We wake up each morning and check messages. We sometimes lose sleep respond-ing to text messages. When we leave class, we check again, and before we enter class or work, we check yet again. Sometimes we check all day long, regardless of our physical location or context.” (McLean 2018) Truer words have never been spoken! I’m constantly checking things, constantly wondering if anyone has liked a photo, and scrolling through the abyss when I should be sleeping because of the early morning wake up call that I have. Professor McLean continues to talk about how even in the most rural of areas, cell phones/tablets and WiFi are somehow still very common.
As I discussed before- in class I use technology for literally everything specifically for school- but also use it for situations not appropriate because of distractions and letting my mind wander more and more rather than paying attention.
I recently got married this past summer and recognize while writing our thank you notes that it literally makes my heart happy writing our personal notes to others and showing my appreciation in a different way rather than sending a text or email. Handwritten letters I think will never go out of style- and maybe

almost become even more special. I know that I always look forward to getting something hand written, even if it’s from my mom for a bill that I forgot to pay for even. The fact that it becomes more special keeps the uniqueness alive. Different types of communication will always be a thing- there will never just be technology that is used, but the way things have changed from even 10 years ago is interesting to make note of.

Johanna,
You are completely correct about the technology being a necessity and a distraction at the same time. We simply cannot get by in school today without technology. As you mentioned, most of our assignments, quizzes, study resources, etc are all online. The problem is, so are our social media platforms, internet forums, etc; All distractions. Nursing school does take up most of our time, so leaving these as low priorities is pertinent. I believe it is all about balance, I don’t think that we should necessarily eliminate these things completely, but should make sure all work is done before play!

Professor and class,
I chose to elaborate on option 1: Interpersonal relationships. The interpersonal relationship I chose to focus on is the relationship with my boyfriend. The relationship culture one has with his/her partner is the most unique relationship one could have; It is a total different relationship than one would have with family or friends. The relationship schemata is a blueprint of social expectations on how we believe relationships should work or what rules it should abide by. However, it is up to the two individuals in the relationship to create their own narrative or idioms. This is creating a sense of belonging, shared memories, and unique routines due to the unprecedented meaning behind them. For example, my boyfriend and I have specific rituals for evenings with his daughter. I cook dinner, then he cleans up and does the dishes while I bathe her. Although this is a very conventional routine, its an example of a ritual

we have developed together.
In today’s society, I think there is too much pressure on relationships and how they align with the ‘normal’ relationship schemata. Social media platforms portray perfect relationships; This affects our self-esteem and security within a relationship because we are constantly comparing our own relationships with others and examining it under a microscope to look for potential flaws. Personally, I believe each and every relationship should be unique in their own way with a partner. A relationship or marriage should never be cookie cutter and should always be creative. Trying to follow a ‘blueprint’ or social norm could easily be the demise of any relationship.

Hi Professor & Class,
Technology is involved in basically everything we do these days, from work, school, and even personal life. We are use some form of technology to do our everyday tasks. When it comes to academics, technology is extremely important. Regardless of the fact that I attend on campus classes, the majority of my work takes place online. Grades are accessed and classes are even scheduled online. This involves me to use technology to complete my assignments. Technology has changed drastically since I was in high school. At that time, calculators were forbidden, now the children take their test on computer programs. Many colleges have pre -requisite classes online these days, having technology is crucial in order to get through these classes. While I like the online classes, I believe that it affects my communication because I am unable to speak to the professor in person if I have questions. I have always like interpersonal communication face- to- face instead of over an email. Information can be perceived differently over technology, when they were not intended to be interpreted that way. I also feel that having to use technology all of the time distracts me from listening to my lecture like I should. I am always trying to access PowerPoints and type my notes.

Technology is used daily in professional manners as well. I can hardly think of a profession that does not use technology in some way in their practices. I know in the medical field everything is done electronically. All patient charts are electronic now. Medication is called in electronically, orders are place electronically, etc. I believe that as a nurse it is easier to chart your information daily because everything is electronic. They do not have to chart by hand anymore. I believe that technology has affected communication in the nursing profession and all professions for the better. Companies have faster access to information that they did before technology. According to the textbook, technology can be used to facilitate meetings, through audio only and audio-visual interactions (McLean, 2018).
Technology is used in civic ways as well. Forums can be made to get a community involved in something they are interested in. The only problem with this is it does not allow for face to face communication among the members.
I use technology in my personal life daily. I listen to my music from YouTube on my ride to school, I watch Netflix, pay bills online, shop online, get on social networking site like Facebook and Instagram, access Chamberlain student portal, and even send emails. I believe that using technology in personal life is both a good and a bad thing. It is bad because we have everything we want to access in our hands, and a lot of times we can get distracted by what is on the phone and not spend quality time with our families. It is a good thing because it allows us to access information we need quickly, but it can stop communication.
I find that I use technology more for nursing school than in any other context. The majority of our assignments are online. It means that I have no choice but to use technology when it comes to schoolwork. I prefer handwritten letters over an email any day. Handwritten letters have a lot more meaning than an email. I also prefer to talk over the phone rather than send a text message. I like to hear the persons voice when I am conversating with them. I hardly ever send a text message; I would rather call my loved on if I have something to ask them.
I found an article that discussed the use of technology in businesses, personal life, and education. Examples in business would be car manufacturing, inventory tracking, video conferencing, emailing, and save money by performing numerous tasks without having to hire employees. People use technology in personal life to connect and meet new people by virtual dating. Lastly, education has various uses for technology, the article discusses applications such as: Khan Academy and Coursera to help students with the studies. (Ramey, 2012).

Hello everyone,
I chose option 2
Our lives are going more on the computer than it is in real life with family and friends.
Group work is mostly relying on technology know, regardless if the class is online or in person. It is hard for me when it comes to working with a group that I mostly online because there can be miscommunications and other circumstances. “Students can feel alienated within a group and there are well documented issues to do with freeloading and inequality of contribution” (McKinney & Sen, 2016, pg 376). In persona is better because you can get the stay om task and get it done quicker. At work, you have to make sure that you are spelling things correctly, making sure that you have full sentences, and that you are talking in the right context. When in public, I don’t try to use technology when it comes to communication, unless I run into someone that needs help and I can’t understand them too well. I try to be straight forward as possible when I have a conversation with someone regardless if it is in person or online to avoid any miscommunication.
I definitely use technology from context to context for friends that I can’t see too much in person I make sure I catch up with them on social media or text them. I use old media when it comes to both my friends and family. I am a person that prefers face to face more than anything because I love looking at the expression on their face and their nonverbal actions. I am a person that loves spending time with people more than just texting, it’s not the same not seeing the people you love laughing or seeing their reactions. I enjoy doing letter as well when it comes to birthdays, a special occasion, or even doing something romantic for my boyfriend because it is so thoughtful and sentimental to give a letter to someone.

Hello Professor & Class,
Week 7 Discussion: Relationships and Technology
Option 2: Technology
Technological innovation in the field of communication has significantly transformed interpersonal communication with a high number of people having access to multi-functional devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, and personal computers. Such technological devices have become increasingly faster, higher-powered, and more portable and this has been communication faster, easier, and better (Scott, 2018). According to Carty (2018), the emergence of new information and communication technologies such as social networking sites and other internet platforms have fundamentally transformed inter-personal communication trends between different people across transnational borders. In the academic context, technological innovations have enhanced the quality of learning in educational institutions as students can collaborate their group projects through technology- based tools including Google Docs. Further, innovations such as e-learning have promoted open and long-distance learning thus augmenting access to higher learning and quality education.
Further, technological innovation in communication technology has transformed the modern workplace by enabling business process restructuring and consequently, increased efficiency and enhanced productivity amongst career professionals. Communication technology has also transformed how organizations and governments engage with the citizens through increased people engagement while in the personal context, innovations in robotics and artificial intelligence that targets human blood and emotions have transformed human life for the better (Li and Du, 2017). The application of information communication technology is fairly permeated across all the four communication contexts viz academic, professional, civic, and personal settings given the advanced access to devices and applications that have limitless communication boundaries. Further, innovations in the ICT field have raised the level of awareness amongst individuals and corporations across all the above-identified communication settings and this has resulted in people being more productive and informative at work and in their private lives (Lewis, 2019). The conventional communication platforms such as letters, phone, and face to face communication are more preferable to new media forms such as social media as the latter is less susceptible to the fake news problem besides being beneficial for the propagation of the social good.

Option 2:
I communicate a lot with emails and text messages in every aspect of my life. I should be ashamed of myself because I prefer to text or email instead of talking on the phone or face-to-face communication. I’m far more comfortable being able to get the conversation over with and say what needs to be said. I remember my mother used to be the most difficult person to get off the phone with. I would spend 5 minutes in closing that conversation. Of course, with my mother being gone, I would now give anything to talk to her on the phone. But I still avoid it if I can.
Technology is amazing. I don’t email much because I usually communicate via text message in its place. I haven’t written a letter on paper in several years. I did just get one in the mail from my niece in Oregon, but she’s 7. I used to love to write letters but with the advancements in technology, that is no longer something that I do.
