Social Media: The Newfound Drug For Many
Social media is one of the fastest-growing innovations of the 21st century, presenting lots of benefits and shaping how people interact with others. You can have friends from all over the world, and interact with users with shared interests. But that’s the good side. We don’t talk enough about the dark side of social media. I know this too well because recently, I found myself rethinking the role of social media in my life.
Like most young people, I juggle Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. I’m not a huge fan of Snapchat, partly because I never really understood how the app works. I use LinkedIn once in a while too, but the app raises my anxiety levels more than I would like to admit.
So, we are left with Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. These three social apps are drugs among millions of users, and most of them don’t even realize it. I was lucky enough to discover my dependence on them early enough to manage the situation. My turning point was when I realized that my productivity had gone down by half because I was using social media too much, even during work hours.
Decreased productivity isn’t the darkest I went with this addiction though. It was the anxiety, anticipating the high you get when you get a notification. As soon as I woke up, I would open the three apps in succession. Before I was done checking all the notifications, I had wasted one or two hours and fell behind on work.
Yet I kept repeating the same thing, day in, day out. It was like an addictive drug that I couldn’t stop using. When I finally said enough of this lifestyle, I uninstalled all the social media apps from my phone. What confirmed it as a drug was the withdrawal symptoms such as the urge to reinstall the apps, fear of missing out (FOMO), and thinking about it a lot. Clearly, social media is a new-age drug that has got a lot of users hooked.

My Unexpected Encounter With Captain America At The Pet Store
It was an ordinary Saturday afternoon, and my best friend and I had some time to kill. We’ve been playing video games all morning and after lunch, we decided to breathe some outside air. Then it dawned on me that I was running low on pet food. My cat, Penelope, can’t stand an empty stomach. She bangs her food bowl with a growl, looking at me with a face that says, “Feed me or I’ll do the worst.”
A visit to the pet store it was. This was the perfect way to get some cool, fresh air, away from the warm and stale environment of my dingy apartment. I pulled out my newly bought bicycle, and my friend and I hopped on it en route to the pet store. As you can imagine, the outside weather was cool, thanks to the afternoon breeze that sweeps all over New York in June. I cycled the bike as my friend held onto my dark blue hoodie for support. In no time, we were at the pet store.
We wandered into the cat food section and went through the over-priced and dramatically designed food brands to choose the best for Penelope. I was pretending to compare the ingredients, knowing very well I’d end up picking the same brand I purchase every time. After all, my cat loves it, judging by how greedily she pounces on the little pellets when I pour them into the bowl.
As I was judging some of the pet food packaging and chit-chatting with my friend, I heard a familiar voice. I couldn’t tell right away who it was. Looking up at the direction of the voice, I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was Chris Evans, Captain America in person, well, without the whole spandex suit and a shield.
No paparazzi, no bodyguard, just him hanging with a beautiful woman who I guessed was his wife. “I have to say something, it is Captain America. How bad can it go?” I thought to myself as I stared right into the blue-eyed, well-dressed, and bubbly man a few feet from me. Before I realized what was going on, I saw the man approach me and say
“Hi there, how’s your afternoon? Oh my god, he must have noticed the shameless staring! We exchanged some pleasantries, I asked him for a selfie, my friend did the same, and they bid us goodbye after picking up some huge amounts of dog food. “That’s a whole lot of dog food, don’t you think?” My friend stated as we went in the opposite direction of the aisle. For the rest of the day, I smiled sheepishly thinking about how warm and down-to-earth Chris Evans is in person. That’s why he is my best Captain America.

An Ethical Examination of the Death Penalty
Over 50 countries still uphold the death penalty, a capital punishment for violent crimes like murder, treason, terrorism, war crimes, and espionage. As conversations around the morality of this penalty happen globally, about 144 countries have abolished the practice.
Human life is believed to be sanctimonious, making punishment by death controversial. While it was a widespread form of justice in medieval societies, modern citizens believe everyone has a right to life. They argue that no one has the right to decide which life is worthy and which one should be ended.
To quote Amnesty International, “The forfeiture of life is too absolute, too irreversible, for one human being to inflict it on another, even when backed by a legal process.” This argument makes sense because there have been instances of wrongful convictions. Serving jail time and being exonerated later is not as unfair as executing someone only to find they weren’t guilty. The death penalty carries the risk of an irreversible error.
Regarding morality, human rights movements and religious organizations insist on the sanctity of human life. In fact, the core of criticism against capital punishment lies in the inherent value of human life. Some philosophers were also against the death penalty, citing solid arguments that the legal process makes mistakes sometimes. Others argued that it’s not right to meet brutality with brutality.
For example, George Orwell, a British novelist and philosopher, expressed his belief about capital punishment in an essay named A Hanging. He believed that “Not only is capital punishment wrong but it’s also against human nature to kill another person.” That said, a significant part of the world population thinks the death penalty is a necessary form of justice. A murderer should have his life taken away just like they took the victim’s life. Executions have happened for a long time, where suspects were proven to have committed unspeakable crimes. They include serial killers, gang rapists, and terrorists.
There is no shortage of philosophers who support capital punishment. For example, Immanuel Kant, a German Philosopher, believed that the “death penalty for murder was the only punishment severe enough to match the crime.” Plato also supported capital punishment saying, “When the lawgiver finds a man who’s beyond cure, he will recognize that the best thing for all such people is to cease to live, best even for themselves.”
On an ethical note, human life is sacred, and no human has a lesser right to live. This standpoint also accommodates the risk of irreversible errors in cases where the conviction is overturned for lack of evidence. It would be a huge injustice to execute someone for a crime they didn’t commit. For these reasons, capital punishment is indefensible.
